The Canting Keel

Tremco does not carry ballast tanks for stability like most of the other boats. Instead, the keel can be canted 28 degrees to one side or the other, to enable the boat to carry its huge sail area. In light winds, the keel is canted to the "wrong" side, to make the boat to heel over a bit.

The keel box is like a huge, wide centerboard case. The ideal place to keep fresh fish in, should you happen to catch any!

Canting keel

The keel fin goes right thru the bottom inside the boat, where its canting can be adjusted with the help of tackles. The box is covered with a spray sealed canvas, to keep the sloshing water outside the boat. Not much room inside for the lone sailer...

The keel hinge system in the finishing stages shows a longitudinal shaft with bearings at the ends. The bearings are faired into the bottom of the boat with the brown (Tremco-) filler. The fin is welded in stainless steel and features an 18% thick, low drag NLF (Natural Laminar Flow) profile.
