Star
WB-Sails initiated a thorough, scientifical research & development
program around Star sails in 2005. The goal is to improve
on the designs shaped through a century long trial-and-error
process, by the most talented sailmakers and sailors in the
world. The emphasis is on light air sails, with
the 2008 Quindao Olympics in mind.
For the R&D program, a novel system with three syncronized
(simultaneous) video cameras was developed, to study the
dynamics of the rig: one at the masthead, foredeck and outside
the boat. WB-Sails CFD-flow
simulations are used in an attempt
optimize the shape for light airs.
The all-purpose main features a radial clew and head. There
are two jibs, with a radial tack and clew.
